Today, the title of this post was said by Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I love this quote for several reason. It shows how friendship is very important, that our friends will stick by us through thick and thin, even if they think we're wrong. If we need them, they will be there. If we don't, they will probably still be by our side. It takes a lot for the people who care about us to leave our side. No matter how far we try and push the away.
After finishing university today, I had arranged to see an old friend who was home from uni herself for a few days. Since this week has not been a good one, my uni friendships have been tested to their limits. I was ready to meet up with a friend and have a laugh and joke. There was no awkward or strained silences. Conversation came much more easily than it did with some of my friends on my course. It was nice in a way, as much as I love and adore my university friends, its lovely to see friends I haven't seen in a very long time.
Friendship is a tricky one.
In my situation, I have friends who I can have a laugh with, but they are also colleagues It's sometimes a hard relationship to get the balance right. There are some times where we have to be professionals, where we have to leave our personal problems outside the door and focus on the work at hand. Of course this is not always possible and I can relate to that, but we have to try our best even when we don’t want to. It is difficult and frustrating at times. This is why I cherish the time I spend with my old friends so much. I don't need to be professional with them. There may come a time in the future yes, but not right now.
Right now, the only important thing I have to do with them, is have a laugh, reminisce about hilarious times and have a catch up, with some off key singing thrown in.
There are people in your life,
Who will come and go.
Some you may forget,
Some may forget you.
There are people,
Who are not worth the time of day.
Who are not worth the air they breathe.
There are some people in our life,
Who will stay by your side.
Through thick and through thin.
They will be a hand to hold,
A shoulder to cry on.
They will lead you through the darkest of times
And share your laughter in the brightest.
These are the people
Who love you.
Always and unconditionally.
We need friends in our lives. We need them to stop us doing stupid things that will possibly hurt ourselves and people around us. We need them to push us to our limits, get us out of our comfort zones. We need them in our darkest hour to pull us through and remind us that it is not be all and end all, it will get better. There may be arguments and fights and god knows what else, but your real friends will stick by you. They won’t be disparaged from your actions, your sharp words.
Of course friends will come and go. People are forgotten and remembered. Those important to you may break your heart, they may hurt you, but that's life. We all get hurt from time to time.
I regularly use friends in my stories. Sometimes I use their mannerism and personalities. Other times I use a particular action or something they have said. If they have upset r hurt me, I write about it. I may never look at it again or chuck it in the bin the second I've finished writing it. But I may us it, or certain parts of it and turn it into something complexly new and unrelated to the original.
My friends inspire me. And I think they always will. Even when they frustrate me!
Listen to your friends. Sometimes they can be right. Sometimes they can stop you from doing something you'll later regret. Sometimes they will be there for you. Sometimes they won't. Sometimes they might be the best thing that ever happened to you. Or sometimes, they might be the worst.
Be friends with someone who you trust, who you can share a laugh with and get through the hard times together. Be friends because you want to. Not because you have to.
I apologise for the short post today, life has got in the way.
I'll leave you with this quote,
"It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends." -Albus Dumbledore, The Philosopher's Stone.
Until the next time.
