As part of my Writing for Radio module at university this semester, we have been asked to pen a small piece titled This I Believe. It's meant to be a piece about our values, what we believe to be true. This is meant to be anonymous in my creative writing group, but I actually like what I've wrote so I would share it with you lovely folks.
This I believe
I believe escapism can be found anywhere. The chance to forget the strains of daily life is one we all need and cherish. Something to distract us from the hum-drum, the nine till five job, the endless list of things to do and things to remember.
I believe that’s why many of us obsess about films, television shows, music and celebrities. I believe it’s why we read and write fan fictions about our favourite shows and films. It’s why we read the same books over and over again, why we listen to certain songs on repeat until we know them word for word.
We need an escape. It’s only natural. It’s so easy for this world to bog us down, everyday life can dampen our spirts. Sometimes, it may feel all we do is complete a routine, a cycle that renews itself each day. And will continue to, until the day we drop dead.
I believe we rely on our obsessions to get us through the day. After a stressful day, all you need to do is settle down with your favourite book, favourite playlist on Spotify or your favourite film or show and just forget about the world outside your window. We all need to forget. I believe it’s one of the ways to help us move on, from an argument or loss of someone dear or just a very trying day. By doing something we love, escaping into a completely different world, we forget everything that’s happened to us that day. By forgetting what’s happened, all the emotions we felt will vanish. By forgetting, we can gain perspective and look at the situation in a new light.
I believe our obsessions, our escapism can save us from ourselves. It reminds us why we do the things we love, why we continuously return to films and books and songs. They remind us of happier times, they give us something to relate to, something to aim towards and inspire our imagination. I believe that fictional characters have the ability of reach out into the audience and entice them into a world they may never have entered before.
I believe escapism is very important. With all the terrible things going on in the world, the daily news reporting on more and more terrorist attacks, on deaths, on ongoing wars and everything in between. We need something to keep us going. We need an escape where our dreams and fantasies can come true. A place where we can be anything we want to be. And nothing can stop us.
That's all for today. I'll leave you with this quote,
“Of course it’s happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?” -Albus Dumbledore. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Pt.2
Until the next time guys!
